6:62 Health Education

The District shall offer health education in compliance with the "Critical Health Problems and Comprehensive Health Education Act" and all rules and regulations promulgated pursuant to the Act by the State Board of Education and the Act's advisory committee.

The program shall include, but not be limited to, the following major educational areas as a basis for curricula in all elementary and secondary schools in the District:

  1. Human ecology and health
  2. Human growth and development
  3. Emotional, psychological, physiological, hygienic and social responsibilities of family life, including sexual abstinence until marriage
  4. Prevention and control of disease, including instruction in grades 6 through 12 on the prevention, transmission and spread of AIDS
  5. Public and environmental health
  6. Consumer health
  7. Safety education and disaster survival
  8. Mental health and illness
  9. Personal health habits
  10. Alcohol, drug use and abuse, including the medical and legal ramifications of alcohol, drug and tobacco use and abuse during pregnancy
  11. Tobacco
  12. Nutrition
  13. Dental health

The following areas may also be included as a basis for curricula in all elementary and secondary schools in the District:

  1. Early prevention and detection of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke
  2. Prevention of child abuse and neglect
  3. Suicide

No student shall be required to take or participate in any class or course on AIDS or family life instruction if his or her parent or guardian submits a written objection to the principal or his or her designee. Refusal to take or participate in such course or program shall not be reason for suspension or expulsion of the student.
