Grades

Each student's grade will include - but is not limited to - daily participation, performances, written work, and quizzes. There are sub-categories within each category.

For Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble, grading is as follows:

40% Daily Grade
25% Performances
10% Written Work & Cougar Music Assessment
10% Playing Quizzes
20% Final Exam

100% Semester Grade

Daily grades (given at 5 points per rehearsal hour) will consist of:

  • Having all necessary materials (instrument in good working condition, music, reeds, pencil, valve oil, mutes, stick/mallets, etc.)
  • Appropriate posture
  • Level of Preparedness
  • Attentiveness/Behavior (Engaged in Lesson)
  • Being seated on time (3 minutes after tone)
  • Monday night rehearsal attendance (Marching Band and Symphonic Band only)
  • Weekly sectionals (Marching Band and Wind Ensemble only)

The performance grade will consist of:

  • Attendance (Participation alone is only 15% of the performance grade)
  • Staying for duration of performance and assisting with clean-up
  • Punctuality (A tardy lowers your performance grade by 15%)
  • All necessary uniform parts
  • All necessary materials (same as daily participation)
  • Level of preparedness
  • Behavior

Written Work/Quizzes/Tests may include but are not limited to:

  • Terms quizzes
  • Rhythm quizzes
  • Playing quizzes/tests
  • Short essays or research projects (program notes)
  • CMA (Cougar Music Assessment) Exam

***Each unexcused absence from a required performance will result in your semester grade being lowered by one (1) letter.
