Eight D. 202 juniors get Foundation summer learning Horizon Grants

Eight District 202 high school juniors will get to experience their personal summer learning adventures thanks to the Plainfield Foundation for Excellence.

The Foundation awarded 2019 Horizon Grants to the eight students to help pay for summer learning enrichment experiences that broaden their academic horizons and explore areas of interest.

The students can use the grants for summer workshops, classes, field studies, internships or conferences during the summer before their senior year. Each grant is for up to $500.

The Foundation for Excellence has awarded these special grants since 2013. Forty- five students applied for grants this year.

“The Horizon Grant program is special because it helps students live a dream and plan for their future,” said Foundation for Excellence Chairperson Margie Bonuchi. “We congratulate these students and hope that they have wonderful learning experiences,” she said.

The 2019 Horizon Grant winners in alphabetical order are:

• Jeremy Amen -- (Plainfield North High School) – plans to attend the “Technology - Pursue your Digital Dreams from the Intersection of Inspiration and Innovation” program at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
   
• Jack Grooms (Plainfield South High School) – plans to attend the “SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) Summer Seminar” studying photography in Savannah, Georgia.
   
• Jordan Lyles -- (Plainfield North High School) – plans to attend the “Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Program-Exploring your Options Camp” at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
   
• Genevieve Millhouse (Plainfield High School – Central Campus) – plans to attend the “Finance NYC: An Insider's View” program at New York University.
   
• Armando Moncada -- (Plainfield East High School) – plans to attend the “Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Program-Exploring your Options Camp” at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
   
• Jenna Obman (Plainfield High School – Central Campus) -- plans to attend “Inaside Dance Summer Intensive” studying dance at the Dance Center in Evanston, Illinois.

• Lindsey Weymouth (Plainfield South High School) plans to attend the “Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Program-Exploring your Options Camp” at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
   
• Alexandra Zack (Plainfield East High School) – plans to attend the “Camp Cardiac and Camp Neuro” program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

The Foundation for Excellence is a private fundraising organization that has been supporting District 202 schools, students and staff with grants, scholarships and financial support for special programming since 1983.

Along with scholarships and grants, the Foundation has also supported special District 202 programs including a District Art Gallery, the Great Read community reading program and the 1847 Schoolhouse Restoration.
