Aux Sable MS 8th graders to play with state All-Junior Band

Aux Sable Middle School eighth graders Kamryn and Katelyn Cook are two of 72 students accepted into the 2022 All-Illinois Junior Band.

Kamryn, who plays percussion, and Katelyn, who plays French horn, will attend the All-Illinois Junior Band Festival on January 14 and 15, 2022 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

The twin sisters were chosen from 168 seventh and eighth grade students who auditioned from 47 schools. The festival includes rehearsals with their peers and ends with a concert.

This is the first year the sisters auditioned for the band. Their dad, Jerrod Cook directs the Plainfield South High School bands and thought the honor band would be a good opportunity for the girls, Kamryn Cook said.

Band members were chosen through a blind audition process. Audition pieces were recorded and sent in to be judged.

“I think going into the audition I thought, ‘Oh, this might be cool but if I don’t get in that’s OK, at least I tried,’” Katelyn Cook said.

“I felt proud that I got in,” Kamryn Cook said.

Katelyn and Kamryn Cook are looking forward to the experience of playing with new people and playing some exciting music, they said.

“I want to tell others who don’t get this opportunity that they can do this,” Katelyn said.

The All-Illinois Junior Band was founded to create a premier musical experience for the state’s finest middle school band students. The goal is to give the students a chance to play with other outstanding students from across Illinois under the direction of a professional conductor.

Barry L. Houser, Associate Director of Bands at the University of Illinois is the 2022 guest conductor.
