facebook District 202 teachers Taylor McCormick (left in photo) and Wendy Wisneski attended the Kagan Cooperative Learning Workshop from June 18 to June 22 in Homewood, Ill., thanks to grants from the District 202 Foundation of Excellence.

The $500 Professional Development Awards help teachers expand and improve their classroom skills and knowledge.

Ten teachers across District 202 received grants this year.

Wisneski, who teaches bilingual fourth graders at Grand Prairie Elementary School, attended the Win-Win Discipline workshop.

There she learned strategies to prevent irresponsible behavior and to promote responsible behavior.

“All the activities were so engaging that I can’t wait to bring them into my classroom and share them with other teachers next year,” Wisneski said.

McCormick, who will teach eighth grade math at Heritage Grove Middle School, attended the Kagan Cooperative Learning workshop.

She learned several strategies to use cooperative learning into her classroom.

Cooperative learning puts students of different ability levels into small groups to use a variety of activities to improve their understanding of a subject.

“We learned how using these structures can help with both class-building and team-building,” McCormick said.
