SPECIAL DISPATCH - SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM SUPT. RE: MOLD August 12, 2016

MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT 202

August 12, 2016

FROM SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS DR. LANE ABRELL

District 202 Families and Staff,

As you may know, a few weeks ago we found small amounts of Cladosporium mold in nine classrooms at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Cladosporium is a mold that is common in the environment.  Outdoors it can be found on plants, and other organic matter.  Indoors, Cladosporium is common in the air and on surfaces such as wallpaper or carpet, particularly where moisture is present.”

The recent extreme hot and humid weather are the perfect conditions for mold growth (outdoors or indoors). Subsequent air quality testing confirmed that the environmental and weather conditions caused the mold at Thomas Jefferson.

Since the hot, humid weather has continued, we took the proactive step of inspecting all of our district facilities starting August 1st.

Minute amounts of Cladosporium were also found in two classrooms each at Central and Liberty elementary schools and Plainfield Academy; and seven classrooms at Meadow View Elementary School.  Several reported areas were tested and we found nothing more than dirt.

Therefore, as a precaution Servpro, a professional cleaning company, is cleaning all of our schools and facilities over the next few days to make sure everything is ready to go for the first day of school on Wednesday. Additionally, we have set the temperatures in the buildings to remain at a constant 75 degrees every day.

This work started Thursday night and will continue over the next few days. It will be done during non-business hours so that teachers can get their classrooms ready without interference.

Please remember that certain levels of mold are acceptable as determined by health officials, and that there is mold on the grass we walk through and in the air we breathe every day depending on the weather.

The level of mold that was found in all five buildings was below those acceptable levels. Our buildings are safe and will be ready for staff on Monday and when students to return Wednesday.

Wishing everyone a great 2016-17 school year!

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Dr. Lane Abrell

Superintendent of Schools
