Ridge Elementary School first graders in Beth Messina’s class tried their hands at science Valentine’s Day-themed experiments rather than exchange cards on February 14, 2020. Students created elephant toothpaste which produced a pink slime they could touch. They also made bird seed feeding cups, used only one hand to create a cereal bracelet and built stacks of candy sugar hearts.

Hello, District 202 Education Partners,

Here is this week’s selection of D. 202 news and information:

census 2020, everyone counts!

The 2020 Census will be conducted starting April 1st. It is vitally important to our community that everyone be counted. The Census helps determine our legislative districts and federal funding.

Here is some basic information about the Census.

Our kids grow up so fast!

Census data help determine our legislative representation in Congress and our share of $675 billion in federal funding.

A kindergartener counted in the 2020 Census this spring will be starting high school when the next census comes around in 2030: That’s 10 years of school supplies, teachers, school lunches, and so much more that federal funding supports.

Please do your part to help ensure they have a bright future by completing the 2020 Census.

This year, for the first time ever, you'll be able to complete the Census on your phone and computer -- and of course, the "old fashioned" way, on paper!

facebook image from facebook Several Plainfield East High School students and a teacher saved the life of another student who was choking on a grape in class on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. During Kristen Lindbeck’s English class, sophomore Joshua Virhuez recalls eating a large red grape and moving it to the side of his mouth so he could take a drink of water. “I thought I had chewed it, and I drank water and it went down the wrong pipe,” he said. “I could feel it go down normally because it was such a big grape. It went down a bit and then it just stopped in my throat.” Classmate Lisette Vazquez, who was sitting next to him, noticed he was choking almost immediately. “I knew he had taken the grape and I looked away for a second and when I looked back, he was doing hand motions and his eyes were getting watery and he was turning red,” Vazquez said. Virhuez ran to the nearest garbage can and tried unsuccessfully to cough up the grape. Vazquez then started giving him the Heimlich maneuver, and Lindbeck called the school nurse. Classmate Nicholas Torres noticed Virhuez was still choking despite Vazquez’s efforts. Another classmate, Rony Moaad, called 911 with the teacher’s approval. “What Lisette was doing was helping, but I could tell it still wasn’t getting the grape out of his throat,” Torres said. “Lisette is a bit smaller than Josh, so I thought maybe he needed someone who was closer to his size and could do stronger abdominal thrusts.” Torres performed the Heimlich maneuver, but again, it didn’t work. He decided to apply back blows, which eventually dislodged the grape. #202proud Read the full story at: www.psd202.org/news/1466
