“With her project, Ava wanted to make sure students in our school have access to the resources they need and feel confident and cared for,” Lakewood Falls assistant principal Anne George said. “I was so impressed by her initiative and heart for others as she worked to create a lasting impact in our school community.”

Merkes partnered with members of her Girl Scout Troop #75815 to create Bloom and Shine kits filled with personal hygiene supplies for girls.

The items were packaged in discreet, decorative pouches so students can comfortably access them through the school nurse or social workers.Lakewood Falls ES Ava Merkes

“We thought it would be a good idea for girls to have those supplies in case they didn’t have the things that they needed,” Merkes said. “Sometimes, it’s embarrassing to ask for those things from other people.”

George praised Merkes for her compassion, leadership, and commitment to supporting others.

“It takes a lot of work and effort, but it’s worth it,” Merkes said. “It feels good to help others.”

Her project is a meaningful example of student leadership and a reflection of the school community’s Lakewood Falls ES Ava Merkes shared commitment to equity, dignity, and belonging for all students.

Merkes said her favorite parts of Girl Scouts are the cookies, the fun activities, earning badges, and the friendships she has made through her troop.
