The Board of Education has hired Stefan Bjes as the District 202’s first Director of Safety and Security.
The Board of Education approved the law enforcement veteran at its April 23, 2025, meeting. The board approved the position at the February 26 meeting. He starts work on May 27.
Bjes brings more than two decades of law enforcement and security experience to the new post.
He most recently served as the Assistant Director of Campus Safety for Patrol at North Central College in Naperville.
Bjes was a patrol officer and a police sergeant for several area law enforcement agencies.
He is an adjunct faculty member at area colleges and teaches various law enforcement classes, including at the police academy.
Bjes is also a Team Adam Consultant for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He additionally served as a school resource officer for 11 years with the Addison Police Department.
Bjes’ variety of experience, which includes community policing and school safety, is a perfect fit for this new, important position at District 202, said Shannon Miller-Finlayson, safety coordinator and Director for Middle School Administration and Personnel.
“We’re excited to welcome our first safety director — a key step in strengthening and expanding the safety and security measures throughout our learning community,” Miller-Finlayson said.
Bjes will oversee the District Safety Committee and serve as the liaison between the district and local municipalities. He will collaborate with the Technology and Business & Operations departments to advance ongoing safety initiatives.
Additionally, he will manage all 31 campus safety drills and protocols and will lead the development and implementation of professional development opportunities for staff related to safety.
Bjes said he plans to spend the summer assessing current safety protocols, strengthening partnerships and increasing preparedness across the district.
“The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community are my top priorities,” Bjes said.
“I am committed to working collaboratively with district leadership, law enforcement, and families to ensure our schools remain safe, welcoming, and prepared learning environments.”
