Lisa Simon

Plainfield East High School (PEHS) proudly recognizes physical education teacher and assistant boys’ and girls’ soccer coach Lisa Simon for her exceptional dedication to student mentorship, athletics, and community service.

Simon was recently honored during National Mentor Month by Buddy’s Helpers, a charitable initiative affiliated with the BodyArmor Soccer Tournament, one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in the nation. The recognition celebrates educators who make a meaningful impact on students and their communities.

The honor was presented during a BodyArmor event by tournament director Joe Trost, who recognized Simon and another educator from Metea Valley High School for their positive influence on students both in and out of the classroom.

“When Joe asked me to come to the front, I honestly didn’t think it was me,” Simon said. “Our boys’ soccer coach, Jake Lysik, had to tell me to stand up. It was completely humbling, and I’m grateful to be surrounded by people who make everything we do possible.”

Through Buddy’s Helpers, Simon partners with PEHS boys and girls soccer teams to engage students in service beyond the field.

Student-led efforts have included honoring military members, purchasing bicycles for children in need, supporting food pantries and homeless shelters, and assisting senior citizens throughout the community.

Last year, students visited American Home in Plainfield, where they delivered handmade cards and spent time with residents in celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Day.

“Being involved on and off the field helps students appreciate what they have while learning from others,” Simon said. “We want students to celebrate successes together, support one another during challenges, and grow through shared experiences.”

Simon has dedicated her entire teaching career to Plainfield School District 202, beginning at Plainfield South High School in 2001 before joining PEHS in 2009, where she continues to serve today.

In recognition of her mentorship, Simon has appeared on multiple Chicago-area television networks during National Mentor Month, further highlighting her work with students and the community.

Looking ahead, students from Plainfield East, Plainfield Central, and Plainfield South high schools will participate in additional collaborative service initiatives through the BodyArmor Soccer Tournament.

“If we can help, then that’s exactly what we should do,” Simon said. “That’s what being part of this community is all about.”
