Kevin Fitzgerald walked into the Plainfield High School-Central Campus earlier this year, all ready to celebrate students' successes from the first semester at an all-school assembly.

The 25-year teaching veteran and soccer coach was surprised with an honor for his role as a dedicated mentor.

He was honored during National Mentor Month in January by the Making a Difference On and Off the field campaign presented by Buddy’s Helpers.

Fitzgerald teaches United States history and world geography, and coaches boys’ soccer at PHS-CC.

Fitzgerald said he was surprised by the award, especially since others also deserve the award at PHS-CC and in the community.

“I hope I’ve had a positive impact in educating and mentoring,” Fitzgerald said.

“And I hope that some of the values and principles we’ve tried to instill in young student-athletes have led to their success.”

Fitzgerald believes everyone needs a mentor, he said. Teachers and coaches can automatically be mentors to the students they work with, he added.

“I think especially our soccer program has established a culture of success through commitment, discipline, and work ethic,” Fitzgerald said.

“Ideally, those that are mentored can and will become mentors themselves,” he added.
