PEHS junior Taylor Miller

For Plainfield East High School junior Taylor Miller, golf has become more than a sport. It has taught her to trust herself, embrace what makes her unique, and keep working toward her goals.

Those lessons helped lead her to the IHSA Class 2A Girls Golf State Championship. pehs junior taylor miller

Miller captured the title on Saturday, October 10, with a two-round score of 137, finishing seven strokes under par. Plainfield East celebrated her achievement with a schoolwide pep assembly on October 13.

“It feels amazing to become a state champ,” Miller said. “It’s a huge accomplishment to represent not only myself, but also East while doing so.”

Miller began golfing at age 6, although she also played basketball and volleyball. Over time, she became increasingly drawn to golf and the opportunities it offered. pehs junior taylor miller stands near podium during celebration

What has kept her invested in the game is its individuality.

“Not everyone’s game is the same, and I think golf has truly taught me how to fully be myself daily,” she said.

Miller began learning the game with coach Don Harshaw and now trains at TPS Academy in Downers Grove. She credits her continued growth to her willingness to learn, belief in herself, and the support of those around her.

“Becoming a state champ is anything but easy,” she said. “I would describe myself as a hard worker and very dedicated to what I do.”

Plainfield East head golf coach Erin McGinnis said Miller’s dedication was evident from the beginning, when she earned a spot on the varsity team as a freshman. Her commitment to refining her skills helped her break school records year after year.

“We always knew Taylor was destined for golf greatness,” McGinnis said. “The countless hours she put into becoming the smart, strong, and mature golfer she is helped shatter school records every year.”

McGinnis also praised Miller’s performance at the state tournament, particularly her ability to handle the pressure of competing for a state title.

“We are beyond proud of her accomplishments over the last few years and are absolutely ecstatic she won,” she added.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Miller said the relationships she has built at Plainfield East have made her high school experience especially meaningful.

“PEHS is an amazing place to be,” she said. “Over my three years, my teammates and coaches have done a fine job supporting me throughout it all. I have met a lifelong friend through golf at East, so I will forever be thankful for that.”

Miller has worked to bring the same commitment to her academics, emphasizing communication and relationships with her teachers to help balance her academic and athletic commitments.

Miller also expressed gratitude for the roles her faith and family have played in reaching this milestone.

As a junior, Miller is beginning the college recruiting process.

“I’m going to continue training and working hard to keep chasing my dreams,” she said.

“Taylor’s state championship is an extraordinary accomplishment that reflects her talent, discipline, and hard work,” District 202 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Glenn Wood said. “We are incredibly proud of her achievement.”
