“I am so appreciative, as the Plainfield School District 202 Foundation for Excellence’s generous contribution made it possible for me to attend the Science on the Grand STEAM Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan,” Thomas Jefferson Elementary school media specialist, Kris Bruno said.
Bruno was one of eleven District 202 teachers awarded the 2024 Professional Development Grant from the Foundation.
“I was able to learn some amazing new strategies and left with great resources and connections,” Bruno added.
The award was created to help pay for special summer professional growth programs designed to support innovative teaching.
“I'm excited to share everything with my peers as we begin the new year,” Bruno said.
“The Foundation understands that money for continuing professional study and growth can be hard to find,” said Foundation for Excellence Vice Chairman Matthew Starr. “We are proud to help our teachers continue to be lifelong learners.”

Check out this amazing self-portrait painted by Plainfield North High School incoming senior Liam McManaman.
He crafted this artwork while attending the FAA Summer Intensive program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign last month.
McManaman attended the immersive, weeklong program thanks to receiving a Horizon Grant from the Plainfield School District 202 Foundation for Excellence.
“It was wonderful to be given a chance to experience a sense of college and what the future may hold, and I am incredibly appreciative of the chance I was given as the intensive was one of the most exciting parts of my summer,” McManaman said.
Participants were also able to enjoy evening activities such as bowling, movies on the Quad, exploring campus, scavenger hunts, and museum trips, plus a special session at the school’s Japan House.
“The program was so much more exciting because it went beyond just making art on campus,” McManaman said. “It was truly a joy!”
The Foundation awarded 2024 Horizon Grants to six students to help pay for summer learning enrichment experiences that broaden their academic horizons and explore areas of interest.

A day in the animal kingdom. Grand Prairie Elementary School second graders ended the school year by showcasing animals on the annual zoo day. Students researched animals in ecosystems including the ocean, desert, rainforest, and the Arctic. They presented facts about their chosen animals using posters, dioramas, and digital presentations. Parents and guardians and fellow students visited each classroom to learn about the animals.

Summer school fun!
Twenty-five incoming newcomer kindergarten through second-grade students enjoyed a three-week summer school program held at Heritage Grove Middle School.
The students in the program are newcomers to the United States and have been in the country for one to three years.
“We help support their growth in English while encouraging and valuing their home language,” said Creekside Elementary School English Language teacher Kim Schuelke.
Some of their summer school activities included a pet adoption reading buddy program, bingo with middle school students, recess, and crafts.
Schuelke and her student teacher also piloted their National Geographic Learning curriculum. This curriculum is designed for newcomers in science, ELA and phonics as well as the iReady teacher toolbox for math to support students in academic English.
